#Women In Combat

Should women be deployed in active combat by the country's defence forces? Let's face it, the ultimate concern is what will happen if they become prisoners of war and are subjected to rape and torture? No-one really doubts their physical, technical or intellectual abilities to become soldiers on the battle-ground. But in the POW scenario, concerns remain.

As news filters in of the Indian Air Force, preparing two of its women pilots ( Flight Lieutenants Alka Shukla and M P Shumathi ) for combat roles, one can say 'It is high time'! These two ladies have been trained at the Yelahanka station in flying twin-engine Mi-8, a utility and medium-size assault helicopter.

Arguing the case for more inductions, it is worth pointing out that even with men who are taken POWs, the torture often includes sodomy and genital mutilation by the enemy. Is rape any worse? If a woman decides to become a soldier, respect her for her choice, for she will be more aware of the risks involved than all the nay-sayers.

As for the worst case scenario in a war, man or woman, let them be given the option of swallowing cyanide, rather than their pride in front of the enemy. But don't deny anyone the pleasure of serving this great nation....Kudos to the two ladies....

SOME FACTS:

1. SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_the_military

From the beginning of the 1970s, most Western armies began to admit women to serve active duty.[2] Only some of them permit women to fill active combat roles, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Israel, Serbia, Sweden and Switzerland.

In most of these countries however the percentage of women in the military is still small (ranging from 5-15%) and the number in combat positions very small (1-3%).

The United States allows women in most combat flying positions. Turkey uses female officers in combat flying (bombardment) missions over Northern Iraq and in ISAF patrol missions in Kabul, Afghanistan. Pakistan employs women in Air Force and has used female fighter pilots in search, monitoring and bombardment operations in her war against militancy. Pakistani female fighter pilots have also participated in international exercises and are currently deployed on supersonic F-7 fighter jets.

THE ROUGH ROAD TO #KASHMIR and LADAKH

kashmir-ladakh highway - copyright -jaya bhargava mahajan
I thank all the kind visitors to this blog, for the good response to my post HOW TO PLAN A SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP TO KASHMIR/LADAKH/LEH ..... wish you had left a few encouraging comments though! Sigh :(

Anyway, I now want to take that earlier post further and give you a few pointers on what you should be prepared for, on this road trip.

1. I was pleasantly surprised on entering the kashmir border (particularly entering Srinagar), to find none of the horror tales of former visitors to be true. There was no uncomfortable luggage or body check by security personnel, no rough questioning and no hostile glares by the local populace. The security was just appropriate, the personnel polite and the locals warm (I must have asked atleast 30 people on the road for directions, during the course of my road trip, and every time the direction given was correct and the person friendly.)

2. The quality of the highway though, is a completely different story. In patches (loooong patches!), you will rough-ride through pebbled and potholed and slushy and narrow and avalanched roads!!!

3. When you are heading out of the Kashmir Valley towards the Ladakh region, cross-check with your hotel staff or local policemen, whether or not the road is shut-down for a few hours, to smoothen one-way traffic on the narrow highway. You will be on National Highway 1 (NH 1) for this trip.

4. Watch out for big stones that can come tumbling down on the road, due to being loosened by recent avalanches. There are warning boards on the highway before every such road-patch; take the warning seriously!

5. If you plan on going camping to beautiful spots like Pyongyang Lake (as I did) then be warned that it is very isolated, with nothing enroute to sustain your food, toilet or medical requirements. So go well-equipped (for details read my post HOW TO PLAN A SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP TO KASHMIR/LADAKH/LEH).

6. Last but not least, there are certain permits required to be obtained for a hassle-free road-trip to Ladakh via Kashmir. Any travel agent operating in the region can help ( maybe I will elaborate more on this in a later post; Watch this space! ).

Adios then! If you have queries, ask away in the comment box....cheers!
