MUSIC OF INDIA
Maybe
some of us live in Punjab, in Gujarat, in Haryana, in Tamil Nadu, Goa, West
Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh or in any other place,
but all of us are Indians and all of us are brothers and sisters. We must love and
respect each other. We must respect each other’s dresses, languages, art &
music. Music is the language of the soul and it unites all people in our
country. As we can understand each other better through music, we will learn about
the music of a few places of India.
1. Music of India: Himachal Pradesh
At
first we will know about Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh is a very beautiful
state, on a part of the Himalaya Mountain. People living over there are also
very simple and beautiful. Their music is also very simple and beautiful. They
sing in their mother tongue, which is Himachali. After a hard day’s work they
put energy in singing and dancing together. They sing during their rituals and
festivals too.
There
are different kinds of songs in different parts of Himachal Pradesh and it even
differs according to the occasion. Roopshu, Mohna, Sirmaur, Joori, Samskara and
Ainchaliyan are few of them. But all the tunes are very simple and beautiful.
Usually they don’t use too many musical instruments except at festival time.
They play instruments like Flute or Bishudi, Algoja (twin flutes), Raba, Ektara, Manjira, Jhanjh,
Dafale, Dhol, Hudka etc. These musical instruments are played along with their
singing and the beautiful tune travels through the air across the beautiful
green valley.
In this
module for teaching music to small children we will do a song based on Himachali Folk tune. We can encourage the
children to sing along or tap and clap hands.

Goa is
at the south west side of India. It is a beautiful state of India, beside the
Arabian Sea. In Goa, we can see beautiful beaches and lots of coconut trees. We
can hear the soothing sound of waves on the sea-shore, while collecting
sea-shells. People of Goa talk in the Konkani language. There are 35 kinds of
songs sung in Goa. But the most famous forms are Kunbi and Mando.
People
from the country Portugal lived in Goa for a long time, so a mix of Portuguese
culture is also seen in Goa. The music of Goa is very energetic and nice. The
Goan people use musical instruments like ghumat,
kasale, madlem,
Nagado, Jhanj, Dhol etc. As Portuguese lived over here we can see the use of piano,
mandolin
and the violin
too.
The sound
of Goan music and the tunes of their songs mix up with the salty air of the sea
coast and become charming.

Rajasthan
is a state with vast deserts. This means that this is the land of sand.
Greenery and water is less here. People who live in Rajasthan often use camels
as a means of transport. The camel can live in the desert for a long time
without water. The lack of colour in the natural landscape of Rajasthan is fulfilled
by the Rajasthanis through their colourful dresses. Their music is also very
colourful. The most popular Rajasthani music is Maand in which the musicians
praise kings of the past through their songs.
